The forest area adjacent to the Eno River Park is vital to the environmental health of the river and it's ecosystem.
The environmental damage to the park and river area would be irreparable. Damage done to a river area is not
only done to that location, but all along the path of the river. Noise and light pollution would displace the wildlife
and quiet that people come to enjoy. Destruction of the forest combined with the increasing severity of storms
would be disastrous. Subsequent erosion and pollution in the area would wash into the river and effectively kill
it..all the way downstream.
This Park is an important area for teaching schoolchildren about the eco-science of this type of habitat. These
kind of learning experiences cannot be done in a classroom, and the lessons create life-long memories.
The value of these types of natural areas are unapparelled in their contribution to the mental health and well
being of people. We all need a "dose of the outdoors" to counter the stresses of modern life, now, more than
ever.
The Eno River Park is not only a precious environmental treasure, but is also an economic boon to the area.
Tourists come to the Eno River festivals and spend money in the area for food and lodging. Development here
and it's permanent harm to this area would cause Durham to lose all that revenue.
Surely there are other locations in or around the city of Durham that would serve just as well for this type of
development. I believe it is possible to achieve the goal of construction, without the destruction of such a
precious resource.
