We can't keep taking mature trees and soil, disturbing watershed systems, covering land with impermeable
surfaces. We can't keep thinking it's just this 54 acres, and people need houses and the jobs that development
provides.
These 54 acres are more important now than they ever have been. Areas like this are shrinking and as they
shrink, crucial resources shrink: water, wetland, air filtration, an alternative to urbanscape.
The criteria for permits must change for the health of everyone, but even existing criteria would call for public
hearings. This tract is rare and precious. Its "development" needs to be examined rigorously and from important
angles that take into account the health of the environment and of all Durham residents.
