Comment My husband and I moved to 4009 Garrett Rd in the Landsbury-whitehall neighborhood in 1983 when it was just a 75 house neighborhood, Cressett Church and 7 Garrett (farm)houses - no Oak Creek Shopping Center, Mark Jacobson car dealership, Garrett Farms housing developoment, 501 Estates Apartments, Garrett West Apartments, nor the postage -sized lots with $500k - $1.5M houses being built at Garrett and Pickett. At that time Durham Academy was the ONLY school on Pickett Road (or as we call it "School House Road"). I remember my neighborhood working with the City Council on Mark Jacobson's lights that were so bright they could be seen from the moon and his brick privacy wall behind the houses on Landsbury. We also worked to decrease the high densities for both Garrett Farms and 501 Estates. The density was decreased (if I recall the apartments down to 110 units on 66 acres and Garrett Farms up to 1/3 acre lots) and the layouts less invasive to our neighborhood. In 2000 we moved 300 feet up and across Garrett to the old Garrett farmhouse at 3904 Garrett. 40 years after originally moving onto Garrett cars and trucks thing Garrett Road is a veritable speedway and traffic on Garrett is very heavy several hours a day (it's a cut -through from Pickett Rd to 15-501). In fact a few of my friends are afraid they'll be rear -ended when they try to turn into my driveway. Also several hours a day Garrett Rd is almost impossible for my dog and me to cross so we can walk around Landsbury. Finally, cable and internet service has slowed significantly because of the usage from these developments. Please do NOT approve the Westpoint development. People will probably adjust to the change over time but clean water as well as homes for the native animals will disappear. It's really nice having a virgin park left in Durham!
