Comment As a Duke student completing a master's degree specifically focused on land conservation, I am opposed to the development of the Westpoint of the Eno. I believe the desire to build new housing has surpassed all adequate considerations of both land conservation and clean water for the Durham area. I personally have visited the Westpoint of the Eno multiple times and am involved with environmental education programs in the area through the Eno River Association. This establishes my personal stake in this project and I have a vested interest in ensuring this area is preserved for both my personal and the community's benefit. As federal notice and comment requires a thorough consideration of issues and subsequent responses, I call on Durham officials to properly consider and respond to issues raised by valuable members of the community such as myself and interest groups that are prioritizing the environment. As global warming increases and the effects of climate change are seen locally in the form of extreme weather events, it is vital to ensure long term water supply and preserve land surrounding our water. Furthermore, there are multiple species that use the Westpoint of the Eno as habitat and must be considered just as much as nay potential profits from development. Nonmonetary impacts of development are still impacts, and I do not believe that Durham is properly considering these at this stage of planning. There is more than enough land in Durham with the potential to be developed that will not impact an easily damaged ecosystem or the current county water supply. I have come to know Durham as my home and am extremely frustrated with the potential of this development affecting an area that I have aesthetic and recreational ties to. I agree with all other opposing statements to this project.
