Comment The park is one of the few places in Durham where you can peacefully float on a boat alone and not worry about anyone else around you. Hard to do when you have developments full of people who can just take a gander at you anytime they look out the window. And the quiet? Already gone. We couldn't paddle any further when we heard the loud, obnoxious sound of a sump pump emptying out part of the river to build something that would just never be as beautiful. Probably more importantly, It was really sad being oppressed by the construction already going on, thinking about the habitat gone. The loss of trees hundreds of years old. I mean were the tree city supposedly, right? Lots of now homeless birds. Who knows what and how many woodland animals will die. And for what? Condos for rich people? Even more redlining? This would be a lot harder to think about if this was going to be affordable housing for folks who have lived in substandard projects, but none of this is going to be that. If you want development, cash money flowing into our city to help everyone, yes even rich people, out; then take out parts of always half -empty Wal-Mart parking lots. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to walk to Wal-Mart. Cut down on the pollution. You could even build a pond and plant trees to shield the development from the parking lot so it would feel like you're by the water... The Eno defines Durham. I don't know if Durham would be here if not for the Eno. But without it intact, the Durham my daughter misses terribly when she goes to college (by the concrete bound Schuylkill River in Philadelphia) will be diminished, and the city we love will die just a little bit more.
