The fact that there are very few public natural spaces being preserved in Durham could be felt during the
pandemic. This development will harm one of the better park lands still available to visit. We need to protect the
Eno River for both it's beauty and because increasing flooding hurts everyone. I've been visiting West Point on
the Eno since I was a little girl, and it would be a crime to put houses closer to the river. We need the buffer to
stay. After all, townhome owners are terrible about the land near them. I lived in one of the better townhome
neighborhoods in Durham, and people saw the woods near them as a place to put their old Christmas trees, yard
waste and throw their old vegetables. Teenagers had been known to go out in the night and throw rocks in the
stream to dam it, cut down tree limbs, and other annoying things. People's cats stalked the song birds and dogs
"got out" and chased people in their yards. It took constant watchfulness to deal with those issues and a willing
HOA. You would need a whole task force to deal with large number of people that this development is proposing.
The buffer of the ridge is currently helping the park to have less of these issues and the maintaince of the park
would definitely be made more difficult with its loss.
