I am writing to voice strong opposition to the Westpoint development and their permit application. As a Durham
resident, I care deeply about this area's community and natural environment. Black Meadow Creek and Black
Meadow Ridge, which will be irreversibly damaged by the Westpoint development, are both critical to the larger
Eno River ecosystem. Not only are these amazing natural spaces a huge part of what makes Durham a
wonderful place to live, they are also essential to the health of the people who already call Durham home and to
the overall health of Durham's natural environment.
I am especially concerned about the negative impact that the development will have on water quality and
drinking water, as well as its negative impact on several threatened or endangered species that have homes in
these specific areas. In addition, the Save Black Meadow Ridge group has raised several other additional
concerns that I share. I believe each point being raised by this group should be reviewed closely, and would
appreciate a response that reflects the vetting of those concerns.
Overall, I do not believe that this project or specific permit is in the interest of Durham residents or the
environment. A public hearing should be required for this development, and there should be greater investigation
into the impacts of this development through a different permit type and further review.
