I am opposed to the Westpoint development near the Eno River in Durham and to the associated permit
application. I believe this proposed development project would be a detriment to the health of the natural
environment of the area and the many species - some endangered - that reside there; would threaten water
quality for the region; and would negatively impact Durham residents of the surrounding neighborhoods as well
as visitors to West Point on the Eno Park and nearby historic sites. The permit application leaves many other
unaddressed issues and should not be approved in its current state without further vetting by the community and
local officials.
This development must be sent through a public hearing to investigate outstanding issues and further solicit
feedback from the members of communities that would be impacted by this proposed Westpoint development.
Several groups have raised legitimate concerns that have not been addressed by the developer - such as those
from Save Black Meadow Ridge and the Eno River Association - and these points must be thoroughly reviewed
and considered prior to approval of the development permit.
The Westpoint development clearly has a significant public and environmental impact which warrants a more
thorough review than has been performed thus far. This project should not be approved, and should be required
to address these issues of public concern prior to the development process being allowed to move forward in
any substantial way.
