All of Eno River Park is vital to wetland retention, health of the land and the ecosystem and conservation of the
many many forms of wildlife it hosts. They depend on the resources. Eno River Forest is also a place to find
peace and to get away from everything. People flocked to it for their mental health during Covid and made it part
of their routine mental maintenance.
Since the folks who stand to profit care nothing about any of that, developing that area will destroy the quality of
the drinking water, the ground water and the wetlands. 400 homes will have yards that will be maintained by
chemicals. There is no green component that will do the job that it will require for the price that will make it
profitable which again, is the bottom line here. I'm assuming an HOA will be in place which will dictate product
usage and frequency. If there isn't and the residents are to choose their own maintenance they will also choose
the most economical and effective solution.
Not only that but there will be trash everywhere. Try as we may, our waste gets blown about by the weather and
it may just be a few items here and there but that's 400 homes worth. Let's say each home is the American
standard of 3.2 residents. That's just under 1300 people for that development. Can we honestly let ourselves
believe even half of them will behave in accordance with environmental hygiene?
Eno is an important historical landmark as well and in a time where those are being broken apart, destroyed and
a lot of people robbed of their heritage, that is the wrong move. They want to build in this area because it is a
beautiful attraction which they can charge to live near so they can capitalize on the asset which will destroy it.
There is ample space elsewhere to build. There are already developments going up everywhere. Durham was
once known for violent crime and is now known more and more for our bountiful natural areas which draw
visitors. No one is going to want to spend time in the woods next to a large housing development and they will go
out to Hillsboro or other areas conveniently nearby.
We need to maintain the natural hygiene, water quality, wildlife, wetlands, oxygenators, history, and beauty of our
home. Trees not only provide oxygen but also keep the soil in tact, protect from wind by decreasing its force,
mitigate flooding and so on. It's not just about it being an awe inspiring land. There is a much bigger picture here
and this developer does not have it in mind.
