Hello, I am opposed to the Westpoint development proposed along the Eno River. The Eno River is a vital area
that provides valuable ecosystems benefits such as the ability to absorb and capture storm water and and
potential pollutants in storm water run-off.
The river is also a historical and cultural resource and is enjoyed by many who want that area to stay
undeveloped and green. Allowing residences to be built close to the Eno River will mean more invasive plant
species, which tend to escape from residential gardens/yards into riparian areas like the Eno River. Invasive
species degrade habitat and lower biodiversity, and also damage the natural beauty of the area when river
floodplains are covered in invasive stilt -grass, periwinkle, Japanese honeysuckle and English ivy that spread
from nearby yards in private residences.
Increased impervious surfaces from the Westpoint project will add to storm water run-off levels, and pollution
from nearby lawns (associated with residences) will also increase pollution running into the Eno River. If the
Westpoint project is developed, the reactionary policies that must follow to protect the Eno River (such as
wetland and other habitat restoration efforts) will be costly and unnecessary. The natural resources around the
Eno River should not be degraded in the first place.
Higher density residences like townhouses are important and greatly needed, but should be developed
elsewhere on the landscape so that the Eno River can continue to perform in its capacity and be enjoyed by
residents and visitors. Building housing in the region cannot come at the expense of our dwindiling natural
resources, such as the Eno River. The Eno River does not need to be damaged by the development and use of
nearby private residences. Thank you for your time.
