Comment I cannot emphasize enough how opposed I am to th development of the acreage known as Black Meadow Ridge which is adjacent to West Point of the Eno. Black Meadow Ridge has been identified as an essential riparian zone, important not only to the trees and wildlife of the city park but also to the health of the Eno River as well. BMR was identified by the city itself, at the mandate of the state and at great expense to taxpayers, as a Keystone property and one which should not be developed. Not only is the Ridge essential to the river and the city park, it also houses an old cemetery of African Americans and should be held up as sacred ground as such. It is appalling to me that there could me one moment of consideration for the application to develop this area and remove all of the permeable ground in favor of blacktop and foundations. The impact on the City Park and surrounding neighborhoods will be immeasurable, and at a time when climate change is resulting in many more severe storms and floods. In addition to my primary concerns regarding this proposal, I am greatly concerned about the quality of Durham air as many many trees will be destroyed. Please reference the situation of Louisville KY which promoted unfettered development and as a result needed to float a bond to replace tress because the air quality was so compromised. As I drive around the city of Durham, I witness this same out of control development. While I understand the momentum to recreate Durham into a renaissance city, clean water, clean air and green spaces are essential to quality of life. This development will contribute greatly to the diminishment of all these desired criteria. I believe that development of Black Meadow Ridge would be, at best, irresponsible, and at worst, corrupted. Thank you for the consideration of my concerns. I have been eager to comment at a Board of Adjustment meeting but both of the meetings have "postponed" public input on this matter.
