Comment I developed Eno Commons, a 22-home neighborhood situated about 1600 feet from the Eno River. Having been intimately involved in development within the Eno Basin, it is inconceivable to me that the Westpoint development would be allowed. Its proposed density and amount of impervious surface, along with the complete destruction of existing large trees and slope -stabilizing vegetation, are completely incompatible with a concern for water resources and the ecology of the unique Eno River Basin. Undercutting the regulations that protect safe, clean drinking water is a game for those who don't care about the future, who only care about short term personal profit. Coming from a background in development, and also being the retired Deputy City Attorney for Durham, I have a healthy respect for the regulatory process, and particularly for its role in curbing actions would mine profits at the expense of key public resources. Individual landowners may bristle at the idea of land use controls. Responsible developers know that the regulatory structures protecting water resources provide safe drinking water for those who live in the communities we create. An abundant clean water supply is a basic requirement for continued development. This Westpoint development is a bad proposal on so many levels. The Westpoint development proposal is the residue of a by -gone era when some developers wouldn't acknowledge there were limits to natural resources. I really hope that your staff will give this proposal a hard look and refuse to permit it.
