As a native Durham resident now in my mid-30s, I have lifelong happy memories of spending time on and
around the beautiful Eno River. The Festival for the Eno was always a highlight of the summer, and I remember
one particularly memorable field trip as a 4th grader floating down the river with our science teacher as river
rafting guide. Our trip was focused on soaking in the sights and sounds around us at a gentle, steady, floating
pace -- probably the first time that any of us 9 year olds were practicing mindfulness. It clearly left an impression
on me.
These experiences have given me an appreciation for Durham's ecological uniqueness, and of the importance of
preserving and stewarding this precious natural resource and its surroundings. So it is with that perspective that
I'm writing to strongly implore the NC Department of Environmental Quality to more thoroughly investigate the
Westpoint development permit application. I do not think the assessments reflect the true picture of the
development's impacts and the impacts from the 401 Individual Clean Water Act Permit disturbances. I do not
think this project or specific permit is in the Public Interest of Durham residents or the environment, and I believe
a Public Hearing should be required for this development.
