NC Drought advisory group,
As I am currently on travel status for a few days, this abbreviated weekly summary of
hydrologic conditions is being sent earlier than normal. I will not be able to participate in
this week's drought telecom.
With respect to potential NC recommendations for this week's USDM release,
examination of the real -time streamflow map
(http: / /waterwatch.usgs.gov / ?m= real &r =nc &w= real %2Cmap) suggests that changes
could focus on possible DO expansion westward from Mecklenburg County into parts of
Gaston and Lincoln Counties to cover the South Fork Catawba River basin.
Suggest "status quo" elsewhere, especially in view of forecasts suggesting potential
effects from the tropics later this week( ?).
-- USDM draft (if available) --
The DO "abnormally dry" designation was modified in two areas within North Carolina
for last week's USDM release: (1) small eastward DO shift in the southern Piedmont
from the Rutherford /Cleveland County area towards Mecklenburg /Union Counties, and
(2) fairly modest DO expansion in the southern Coastal Plain.
In the draft 1 version for this week's release, no changes have been suggested yet for
North Carolina, and the USDM author did not make any specific comments concerning
the Carolinas region in the email accompanying draft 1.

When viewing the USGS WaterWatch streamflow information, you can hover your
cursor over a site and a pop -up box appears with various pieces of information,
including the percentile for the current streamflow AND the current percentage of mean
and median for the calendar date.

As of October 21 (Sunday), streamflow conditions indicate 12 percent of sites across
North Carolina have percentiles for 7 -day average flows falling below the 25th percentile
for the calendar date (see graph below). This percentage suggests generally no
change in overall streamflows relative to 12 percent just a week ago.
