Ha!! Sounds good about next Wednesday. I’ll let you know about times and if they delay till later in the week. I’ll meet
you up there.
The bridge on HWY 194 (Ashe Bridge #8) hasn’t started yet, but will be a big project. It had to be re-let, as all the bid
prices came back to high. I just checked with our project manager and the earliest it would start would be Jan 2022, so,
more likely it will start spring of next year after it warms up a little.
That said, we could go look at some other projects in the area, and/or recently completed bridge/pipe maintenance
projects if needed / you have time.
Kevin

Kevin,
Given that is Halloween season, I was trying to scare you!
???? I’ll pencil in next Weds to take a look at the
turbidity curtain and bent removal. Jim mentioned another bridge project on the New R on NC 194. I would
like to run by that one too if it is still under construction.

Hey Dave,
Jim called me this morning and said that he met with you at Hartzog Ford. I was nervous when he said you visited since
I didn’t know you were coming, but I suppose it might be beneficial to have you show up unannounced from time to
time to keep everyone on their toes
???? Regardless, I’m happy that everything looked ok! Jim is a good inspector, and
easy to work with. Jim mentioned the turbidity curtain discussion and they plan to install one. It will be a good chance
to see how well it works next week while removing the old bents. Sounds like they are going to try and remove the old
bents next Wednesday. I’ll follow up with you to confirm, but that’s the plan for now.
Did you visit any other sites? I have some follow up work to do on the E section of 221 from our last visit. We have an
onsite meeting planned for next Thursday, so I’m going to go over the sites we visited and some other permit sites with
project staff and the contractor. Also, we should be having a final on Sampson Rd and the northbound bridge over the
Yadkin River overflow on 421 soon – I just came from the latter and it looks good!
Will plan to touch base early next week.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Kevin,
I reviewed the above project yesterday and talked with Jim Holloway and the contractor. They were working
on causeway removal and placement. There was some turbidity associated with the operation from riprap
fines. We discussed that a turbidity curtain would be helpful both while installing/removing the existing
causeway and while demolishing the old bents. The stream appears to be deep enough along the banks to
facilitate curtain efficacy. So anything you can do to move that forward would be appreciated. All else looked
good - SDO’s were maintained and I observed where a silt bag was used to treat turbid water pumped from
the drilled shafts - per conversation with Jim. Let me know when they plan to remove the old bents so I can
try and get out there to observe. Thanks.
