(Attach any notes or documents as needed.) Date of field visit:n/a Description of review activities, results, and conclusions: Review of HPO quad maps, relevant background reports, historic designations roster, and indexes was undertaken on March 28,2019. Based on this review there a National Register-listed property in the Area of Potential Effects(APE). The existing is 40 feet length and will be replaced within the existing alignment with offsite detours with a box culvert. The existing bridge crosses the Ballahack Canal, which was constructed in he 1850s. Consultation with the Eastern Office of HPO, Scott Powers wrote the following, "These slave dug canals are all over eastern NC but very few of them seem to maintain enough integrity to qualify for listing since over the last 150 years they have often been rerouted, straightened, widened, narrowed and banked." Since the existing bridge was constructed in 1968,no new effects to the canal would occur with the construction of the replacement bridge. No other structures over 50 years of age are in the APE except the bridge itself which does not warrant further study. No historic properties will be affected by this project.
