Subject: NCO188437 Camp Gwynn Valley: Cryptosporidiosis Alert from NCHAN 7 -6 -11
The Transylvania County Health dept made us aware of the cryptosporidiosis event at Camp Gwynn Valley. A similar
event happened at this camp a few years ago which I believe was centered around the camp's farm (petting zoo) and
raw vegetable preparation. The following is an overview of the events as we understand them thus far.
The Transylvania County Health dept. has been investigating the cryptosporidiosis event for the past few weeks and the
farm area is again the center of their investigation. The camp water system (3 wells) has not shown any bacterial
problems. A separate "farm" well (raw water) has not shown the presents of coliform but the yard hydrants (3) for the
barn have shown fecal and /or total contamination.
Stuart Black (ARO-PWSS 828-273-7578 cell) has been assisting Patricia Hawkins (Transy. Co. HD 828-884-3136 x 242) ani
can be contacted for additional information. We plan to continue to assist the system and health officials as need.
