Comment I am writing to express my extreme concern about the proposed Westpoint development of Black Meadow Ridge and to show my support for its preservation. This development will be an environmental nightmare that will damage the Eno River, Durham drinking water, and a historic Black cemetery where freedmen and women from Stagville Plantation are buried. Not only will acres of old growth forest be cut down and wildlife displaced, but the fragile system of drinking water will be impacted by pollution and flooding and an increase in catastrophic raw sewage spills into the river, which is already happening. We cannot allow this development to cause this irreparable harm to such a historic site, and to one of the few remaining green spaces closest to downtown. As we are seeing in this pandemic and in an increasingly warming climate, we need green spaces and access to clean water more than ever. If we allow this mistaken plan to move forward it will impact the city of Durham for generations to come— when it's too late to do anything— and our descendants will wonder why we didn't take action to preserve this land and water when we could.
