WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
The Town of Pembroke Waste-
water Treatment Plant (WWTP)
is capable of treating
1,330,000 gals/day. When
you flush, our work begins.
Wastewater travels through a
network of pipes, pumps, man-
holes and valves, called the
collection system. Once it
reaches the WWTP it under -

SANITARY SEWER OV
A sanitary sewer overflow
(SSO) is when wastewater
escapes from the wastewater
collection system to the
ground or surface waters.
The North Carolina Division of
Water Quality defines a re-
portable SSO as any spill to
the ground in excess of
1,000 gallons or any spill,
regardless of the amount,

These SSOs must be re-
ported to the state and local
media. The Town has no
reportable SSOs this report-
ing period. Pump Stations
are mechanical devices and
sewer lines are subject to
clogs from grease, roots,
construction debris, etc., all
systems are subject to spills.
I
You may have noticed smoke
from vents, foundations,
storm drains, and broken
clean out plugs. This is an
indication that dangerous
gases and unpleasant odors
are entering your home. This
should not happen if plumb -
Ind is in good working order.
We urge you to Investigate
your plumbing to insure effi-
cient ventilation. The correc-
tion of these defects is the
responsibility of the owner.
In order to help prevent spills,
the collection system staff
uses television equipment for
inspections and incorporates
routine flushing for preven-
tive maintenance. Public
Works Department inspects
and cleans at least 10% of its
sewer lines each year. Dur-
ing the past year 16,499
linear feet were cleaned.

The Town of Pembroke is actively seeking community involvement in the implementation of a
new grant project. In April 2006, Pembroke secured a $200,000 grant from the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) to assess the level of contamination at multiple sites throughout the
Town. Other cities and towns throughout the U. S. have used this program to turn dilapidated
buildings into new parks or businesses. You can help by telling us of any abandoned or under-
utilized sites in the area you know about. This can be done at the project web site
www.ctcbrownfields.com/pembroke or by contacting: Joseph Morici, Brownfields Project Manager,
Concurrent Technologies Corporation, (800) 846.6001, moricij@ctc.com
Recommended sites must be thought or known to be contaminated with petroleum, such as
from leaking underground storage tanks from former gas and/or service stations. Over the next
several months, the Town will host a series of town meetings where you can let us know which
of the sites you feel should be redeveloped first. Meeting dates and times will be posted on the
project Web site, The Town will Conduct health monitoring, and create cleanup/redevelopment
