Re: Hydraulic Conductivity Testing and Soil Seasonal High Water Table Determination for
Oak Ridge Metal Works stormwater facility in Beaufort County, NC.
Dear Mr. Baldwin,
As requested, soil seasonal high water table and Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity (K„)
testing was conducted on May 13, 2013 to aid in the design of a stormwater treatment
system.
The method of soil evaluation for seasonal high water table utilized one hand auger
boring to a depth of 96 inches. An enclosed map identifies the approximate location of
the boring conducted in the proposed stormwater treatment area. The findings of this
investigation suggest a seasonal high water table is approximately 12 inches from the
surface. The method of determination was based on the presence of soil morphological
features containing > 2% chroma 2 color or less mottles. The soil profile description
contained:
Ap - 0-5 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) sandy loam; granular
structure; friable.
Bt1 - 5-28 inches; yellowish brown (10YRY5/6) sandy clay loam with many gray
(10YR 6/1) depletions; weak fine subangular blocky structure.
Bt2 — 28-84 inches; yellowish brown (10YRY5/8) sandy clay loam with many light
gray (10YR 7/1) depletions; weak fine subangular blocky structure.
C — 84-96 inches; tight gray (10YR 7/1) loamy sand; single grained; very friable
One Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity (K,) measurements was also performed adjacent
to the seasonal high water table boring location. The measurements utilized a two inch
diameter auger hole that was bottom planed and brushed prior to each test. A constant
head permeameter was used for testing. The results of testing are presented in the table
below.

ENGINEERING, PA
GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION
This project includes the construction of a new building addition, parking lots, storm drainage and a storm
water wet detention pond. Approximately 3755 SF of new buildings will be constructed. The parking lot
and access improvements will account for 31563 SF of new pavement. The property is bounded on the
north by undeveloped land, on the south by Page Road on the east by Cherry Run Road and on the west
by undeveloped land. The site has slopes averaging 0 to 1.5%. Overall, elevations vary from a high point
of 30 feet above sea level to a low point of 24.0 feet above sea level. The soil types on the site are
Goldsboro, Lynchburg and Leaf soils. This project drains to Mitchell Branch and the Tar -Pamlico River
Basin.
STORMWATER INFORMATION
Pre -development, this project site consists of 5.572 acres, with existing slopes averaging from 0% to
1.5% and 35,525 sf of existing Impervious building, pavement and walks of which 1871 sf will be
removed. Existing surface drainage is currently draining towards the west property line where an existing
ditch exists. The proposed development will add 35,318 sf of new and 48,640 sf future impervious area.
Post -development, runoff from 5,10 acres will be collected in a proposed storm drainage system
consisting schedule 40 PVC and reinforced concrete pipe before it is discharged into the proposed wet
detention pond. From the detention pond, the outflow will be discharged into an existing ditch that drains
eastward to towards Mitchell Branch. The remaining 0.472 acres of site will drain to the perimeter swales
on each property line. The total impervious area that will be draining into the new wet detention facility will
be 117,612 sf and will include the existing impervious area and the future.
The purpose of the wet detention pond is to reduce the nitrogen and remove 90% total suspended solids
in the system, and for the attenuation of the peak stormwater flow of the 1-year, 24-hour storm (80%-2yr).
Using the Surface Area to Drainage Area Table for 90% TSS in the Coastal Region, the required surface
area for this pond for the inclusion of future development is 48,640 sf. The proposed pond contains
12,000 sf of surface area.
The breakdown of the impervious areas for this project site area is as follows;
