1. CHANGES TO AQUATIC VEGETATION LIST:
SUBSTITUTIONS DUE TO LACK OF PLANTING STOCK WILL BE CHOSSNI FROM THE 'APPROVED LIST
WITHIN THE NCDENR STORMWATER BMP MANUAL, JULY 2007 (REVbfiED 6-16-09).
2. PLANTS ARE TO BE PLACED IN ROWS, ALTERNATING: SPECIES BASED ON LAYOUTS SHOWN.
ALL PLANTS TO BE SPACED APPROXIMATELY 2' ON CENTER.
3. EMBANKMENT BETWEEN FOREBAY AND POND SHALL USE AQUAIfIC VEGETATION FROM UPPER
HALF OF SHALLOW LAND.
4. JUSTIFICATION FOR SPECIFIED PLANTS:
—ALL SPECIES EASILY OBTAINABLE
—PLANTS MAINTAIN LOW GROWTH HEIGHT, IDEAL FOR'RESIDENT;IVAL SETTING
—PLANTS PRODUCE RELATIVELY FAST GROUND COVERAGE
—LOW VEGETATIVE MAINTANENCE

SO LONG AS PLANTS ARE ON THE APPROVED LIST OF :SPECIES SNECIFIED IN THE BMP MANUAL
FOR WETLANDS.
SOIL MEDIA NOTES:
1. THE SOILS USED FOR THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A MET DETENTION BASIN MUST
HAVE A LOW PERMEABILITY. IF THIS IS NOT THE CASE THEN AI LINER (CLAY OR MANUFACTURED
MATERIALS) WILL BE REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN THE LEVEL OF WATERS NECESSARY IN THE
PERMANENT POOL, SPECIFICATIONS AS PROVIDED BY LICENSED GE(Q)TECHNICAL ENGINEER.
2. IF "IN SITU" SOILS ARE TO BE USED THEN A SOIL ANALYSIS WILL NEED TO '.BE CONDUCTED
BY A LICENSED GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER TO VERIFY THAT THE ONFSITE SOIL IS ADEQUATE TO
ENSURE HEALTHY PLANT GROWTH AND PROPER INFILTRATION THRmUGH THE SOIL. THE FOLLOWING
ITEMS SHOULD BE CHECK AND INCLUDED IN A SOIL- ANALYSIS:
-SOIL pH
-SOIL TEXTURE
-SOILT TEST NCDA & CS
-CONTENT
-HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY & INFILTRATION RATE (HIGHLY RECOMMfENDED)
3. ANY SOILS THAT ARE USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BMfP MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING
REQUIREMENTS:
-MIX MUST BE UNIFORM AND FREE OF MATERIAL GREATER THEN V" (STONES, STUMPS, ROOTS,
ETC.)
-TEXTURE SHOULD BE LOAMY SAND, WITH NO MORE THEN 10%.CLIAY
-MIN. ORGANIC CONTENT OF 10% BY DRY WEIGHT (WOODY SPECIE.a;) AND 57. (TURF AREAS)

INSTRUCTIONS
ACTIVITY
Replacement of
All dead plants should be remolded and disposed of, before vegetation that has failed on a large scale is replaced, the cause of
Dead Plants
such failure should be investigatted. If the cause can be determined, it should be eliminated before any reinstallation.
Fertilization
The objective of fertilizing at a BIMP is to secure optimum vegetative growth rather than yield (often the objective with other
activities such as farming). Inferrhile soils should be amended before installation and then fertilized periodically thereafter. Fertilizer,
can be composed of minerals, orgganic matter (manure), compost, green crops, or other materials.
Irrigation/ Watering
Watering of the vegetation can often be required during the germination and establishment of the vegetation, as well as
occasionally to preserve the vegetation through drought conditions. This can typically be accomplished by pumping water retained
in the BMP or from the stream, iimstalling a permanent irrigation system or frostproof hose bib, or using portable water trucks.
Mulching
Mulching should be used to maiinitain soil temperature and moisture, as Well as site aesthetics. A half inch layer is typically
adequate. Ideally, mulch shouldl The removed before winter to prevent an infestation of rodents.
Weeding
Weeding is often necessary in tliie first growing season, particularly if herbaceous grasses are outcompeting the young woody
vegetation growth. The need for:'weeding may be largely eliminated by minimizing the amount of seed used for temporary erosion,
control. Weeding may also be regquired if, over time, invasive or undesirable species are entering the site and outcompeting plants,
that are specifically involved in tlhe treatment of the stormwater.
Disease Control
Based on monitoring observatiorms, either insecticides or (preferably) organic means of pest and fungal control should be used.
Mowing
Mowing of perennial herbaceous grasses and wildflowers, especially once seed heads have set, promotes redistribution of seed
for this selfsustaining system. Moowing should be carefully controlled, however, especially when performed for aesthetics. As
adjacent property owners and customers in general learn more about BMPs, their vision of what is aesthetically pleasing can
change. Grasses, in healthy herbaceous stands, should never be mown more than once per year.
