Background The Town of Burgaw has identified the need for a new regional wastewater pump station (PS No. 2) and force main to serve an unsewered area, east of US Highway 117. In addition to the new wastewater pump station, the project will include redirecting flow from the existing White Tractor Pump Station to the new station via a combination of approximately 2,600 linear feet of 8" gravity sewer and 4" sewer force main. The project will involve the design and permitting of: ✓ 450 GPM wastewater pump station ✓ 7,700 linear feet of 8-inch PVC sewer force main ✓ 1,340 linear feet of 4-inch PVC sewer force main ✓ 1,220 linear feet of 8-inch PVC sanitary sewer Note that the 1,340 linear feet of 4-inch PVC sewer force main will be permitted separately as a permit modification for White Tractor Pump Station. The new 8-inch force main will manifold into an existing 20-inch force main that conveys the Towri s wastewater to the Town of Wallace, North Carolina for treatment. The basis of design for the proposed pump station and associated pipeline improvements are detailed in the following sections. H. Demands and Peak Hour Factors 04576-0012 1 September 2021 US HWY 117 Regional Pump Station and Force Main Flow projections for PS No. 2 were developed based on information provided by the Town. There are 400 residential units planned for development within the service area. In addition, an existing pump station (White Tractor PS) currently flows into a small diameter gravity sewer which is rapidly approaching the maximum capacity. To alleviate the flow on the receiving gravity sewer, the flow will be redirected through a combination of force main and gravity sewer to ultimately be served by the new regional pump station. The average daily flow is summarized as follows: ✓ Average Daily Flow (ADF) = 172,400 GPD Additionally, as required by NCDEQ Minimum Design Criteria, peak hour factors were calculated based on Residential Equivalent Units (REU) to be constructed within the station service area. The NCDEQ formula as shown below was utilized in this calculation. Peaking Factor Calculation Service Area Population = P Peak Factor = 18 + P 4+P The peaking factor used in the pump station design is as follows: ✓ Peak Hour Factor (PHF) = 3.7 III. Pump and Force Main Sizing Based on the average daily flows and PHF's the peak pump rate for PS No. 2 is provided below: Table 1 —Flow Summary — Regional Pump Station No. 2 Average Daily Demand Minimum Peak Pump Design Pumping Rate (GPD) Peaking Factor Rate (GPM) (GPM) 172400 3.35 442 450 Hydraulic modeling was conducted for PS No. 2 to determine the pump operational characteristics.
