Wieland Copper Products, LLC (WCP) NPDES Permit requires a final report to be submitted to inform
NCDEQ that WCP will be in full compliance of the Copper Removal Standard as stated in the permit.
On June 11, 2021, WCP submitted a Permit Modification Application Form 1 and 2C which included
drawings of a Copper Removal System signed by a Professional Engineer. The application stated that
WCP plans to re-route the effluent of the biological treatment plant from Outfall #001 to two 100K
storage tanks and combine with the process cooling water. The combined water will be treated with
coagulants, flocculants, filtered, and pumped to a resin type copper removal system. The resin
system will utilize ion exchange to adsorb the copper prior to discharging to Outfall #003, Outfall
#001 will be rendered dormant and only used for emergency purposes requiring NCDEQ notification
within 24-hours if, and when used for emergency.
WCP received a draft copy of NPDES Permit No. NCO035173 dated September 14, 2021, listing the
current modifications and requirements. WCP's current status is as follows:
• Installed and tested the lift station that will transfer the effluent from the biological
treatment plant to the 100K storage tanks.
• Installed all required piping.
• The electronic monitoring and control system is scheduled to be installed by mid -October.
• Ordered and are waiting on the arrival of the Copper Removal System, tentative arrival date
mid -November.
• Supply chain issues we spoke about are causing unexpected delays out of our control. The
main item of concern is the construction of the 4K mixing tanks. The estimated time of
arrival for the tanks is December 1.
WCP plans to have the system in operation by mid -December depending on availability of
equipment and materials.
