On August 06, 2021, the Town of Hertford experienced a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO).
The spill occurred from a manhole located at 305 South Edenton St. An estimated volume
of 500 gallons reached the nearby storm drain. The source of this spill was from the
Cemetery lift station. A heavy rain event moved in over the area on August 5, 2021. Due
to the amount of rainfall the system surcharged, causing extended runtimes on both
pumps. The following day of this rain event both pumps lost prime, rags and trash was
removed from the pumps impellers. A 6" Goodwin bypass pump was connected shortly
after_the pumps were being repaired. Cemetery lift station is our largest station within
the collection system, which maintains the highest level of flow. Once the station reached
high level the gravity line upstream backed up and overflowed from the manhole. The
Overflow was contained shortly after the bypass pump was connected. The pumps were
cleaned and put back in regular operation. All alarms, and telemetry operations were
operable during the event, and tested again once station was put back online.
