Subject: REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Ranch Farm Road
Dear Mr. Smith:
13 -1)5oar)
AUG 2 2 2013
e s'' cruain,
In response to your letter of June 19, 2013 (DWQ #13 -0587, Wake County, Ranch Farm Road) I am
providing the information requested. I appreciate the interaction and information provided by Cherri
Smith to provide direction and information needed as I gathered this material.
Responses are numbered below in accord with the letter I received. NCDENR items are shown in italics.
1. Indicate which 404 Permit the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had authorized for this project.
In correspondence with you and Mr. David Shaeffer, Corp of Engineers, the Permit is National
Permit 13.
2. Provide a location map for this project.
I have enclosed two different maps showing the location. One map shows the location of 801
Ranch Farm Road relative to U. S. Highway 401 and Old Stage Road. The other map shows the
location of the lot (801 Ranch Farm Rd.), the stream and the location for which the after - the -fact
permit is being requested. These maps were printed from the Wake County Real Estate website.
3. Provide photographs of the work that has been done to stabilize the streambank as well as any
plans for re- vegetation of the riparian area.
Two photographs are provided. One is taken upstream showing the larger pile of concrete slabs
on the left. In the same photograph, upstream from the pile, smaller concrete cylinders are
visible on the left side and they are also providing partial bank stabilization. The other
photograph is taken looking downstream toward the pile of slabs which are barely visible. This
photo shows the extent of erosion of soil from the roots of a large tree (tree is visible in the
other picture).
Both photos show the extent of re- vegetation already occurring in the stabilized area. Plans over
time are to use additional local soil to slowly cover parts of the slabs to provide for growth of
additional native plants along the streambank.
4. Clarify the stream and buffer impacts.
The distance of stream and buffer impacts is 40 -43 feet along one side of the stream. The other
side of the stream is lower and the bank has not been and will not be eroded. The original
estimate of impact addressed in the application covered only the area of the concrete slabs and
that number was reported in error relative to the total stream and buffer impact of the total
project of bank stabilization.

I trust that the information provided is sufficient to allow issuance of a permit for this minor bank
stabilization project.
My thanks to Autumn Romanski, Cherrie Smith, and David Shaeffer (Corps of Engineers) for very helpful
provision of information and guidance from initial contact through application for the permit and the
information provided in this letter.
Sincerely,
Timothy H. Sanders
