HomeMy WebLinkAboutNC0089109_NOV-20212-SS-0015 Response_20210924Timeline of Response Actions
July 28 — Initial pond samples, collected during liner repair, showed low pH and metals; liner
repaired and replace to prevent rainwater infiltration.
July 28-Aug 9 — Ponds taken out of service and replaced with tanks
Aug 9 — Sampling and analysis Plan submitted to EPA/NC to assess below ponds, ravines,
and geology/geohydrology
Aug 12 — Plan implementation initiated. Weekly progress reports to NCDEQ. Some delay
due driller availability and rain
Sept 15 — Plan for dewatering below ponds developed. Implementation can begin
immediately
Sept 20 — Installation of soil borings and wells begins (in progress)

Pond (Raffinate/Depleted/Maint/Stormwater) Soil Boring Locations
11 soil borings are being advanced utilizing a
DPT drill rig in the general locations depicted by
the green dots on the map.
2. Soil from each location will be screened in 1-foot
intervals with a handheld XRF to determine
sample intervals. Interval samples will be sent to
the onsite laboratory for analysis.
Samples from at least 2 intervals in each soil
boring will be collected for laboratory analysis.
5 of the soil borings in the pond area will be
converted to 2-inch monitoring wells based on the
XRF field screening, potential to make water,
and/or soil sample results from the onsite lab.
2 other groundwater only wells will be installed to
the east and southeast of the pond area. These
wells will be used for hydrogeological information.

Sand/Gravel layer (if present) below liners will be
cleared to top of soil (approx.1.0 to 1.75 feet)
Samples will be collected via hand auger to a depth
of 3.0 feet or refusal, whichever is shallower.
Once sand/gravel has been removed, sample
intervals will be 0.0 to 0.5 feet and 2.5 to 3.0 feet in
underlying soil.
One location from each pond will be advanced until
refusal or hand augering becomes impractical.
Sampling will not advance if free liquid is noted;
however, liquid will be sampled.

Surface water will be collected from 3
different ravines onsite (Ravine 4, 5 and 6)
at the locations specified in the map.
Up to 12 surface water samples per event
will be collected based on flow and
availability of water.
Up to 12 sediment samples will also be
collected in these areas where pooling of
surface water is located.
Samples will be analyzed for 8 RCRA
metals + Zinc, and pH. Samples will be
