Existing structures and creek detail are in black ink. Propose modifications, structures and detail are in red ink. Proposed structures to be constructed using natural creek boulders, gravel, and fill material and reinforced with poured concrete and rebar where required. The new curbs along the length of the downstream end of the existing ford will be fabricated using reinforced poured concrete. When poured concrete is used appropriate measures will be taken to insure that the stream is not contaminated with raw concrete. Such measures may include temporarily diverting the stream flow to one side using sand bags across a portion of the ford and /or temporary boulder dams in the creek while the other side of the creek is being worked on. 2. UPSTREAM PLAN: A survey of normal creek width along a mile section of Compass Creek showed a varying width ranging from about 7 ft. to 30 ft. The historical upstream width in the vicinity of the ford was about 18 -22'. We made the decision to restore the width of the creek at the ford to 20' tapering to 18' at a point at 40' upstream of the ford. This is the existing width of the water level at this 40' point. This will be accomplished by utilizing large boulders along the border and fill material composed of local gravel, stones and soil between the boulder wall and the existing stream wall. The stream bed will be excavated where required to give an appropriate stream depth. A side channel of 18' width will be constructed from a point at 8' upstream along the new channel east bank extending 3' to the east to the location of the feed pipe to the Emily McBride fish pond. 3. ACROSS THtFORD PLAN: The stream depth across the ford will be increased by 6 ". This will be accomplished by installing curbs along the downstream edge of the ford. A 6" curb will be installed along the western 10' width of the 20' stream flow across the ford. The eastem 10' of the20' stream flow will have no curb as the water there will flow into a calming pond created by the new upper dam. This new dam will be the same height as the existing ford plus the 6" curb thus maintaining the water level within the calming pond the same as the flow across the ford. There will be a higher curb of 8" installed along the 10' section of the ford west of the stream flow to keep the flow under*normal conditions within the channel width. A 6" curb will be installed along the 10' section of the ford east of the 20' channel width for the same reason. A higher curb is not required here due to the natural upward slope of the terrain at this point. 4. DOWNSTREAM PLAN: A dam will be constructed from the center line of the stream flow on the downstream side of the ford to a point on the eastern stream bank approximately 15' from the ford. This will create a pond here as described above in paragraph 3. 6" curbs will be installed at both ends of the dam to create a channel width of 10' across the dam, including the fishway channel, corresponding to the 10' width of the Input to the pond. This insures an even flow Into and out of the pond. Page 1 1 Notes on creek detail drawing dated 8 -4 -2013 by 3ud Germon Another Dam will be constructed at a point 25' downstream of the ford. This dam will raise the creek level upstream of the lower dam by i' above Its current level, providing a stream level entry to the fishway channel. The water level at this location will be maintained at a minimum of 1.5' above the stream bed on the downstream side of the dam. A stepped fish channel structure 20' long will be constructed between the lower dam and the pond created by the upper dam. There will be 4 steps between the lower dam and the upper pond. Each step will have a minimum depth of 1.5'of water and a maximum rise of 1' to the next step. The stream side of the fishway will be at a height of 6" above the fishway channel at all points and each step will be curbed with a 6" curb on the bank edge of the step to maintain the channel width of 1'. CRITERIA: In designing this fishway and the lower dam I reviewed the Publication "Wafter Crossing Design and Guldellnes" by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and also the Publication "How High Can Brook Trout lump? A Laboratory Evaluation of Brook Trout Jumping Performance" by M C Kondratieff, C A Myrick as published in "Transactions of the American Fisheries Society (2006), Volume: 135, Issue: 2, Publisher: Taylor & Francis, Pages: 361 -370.
