C. 27611 Dear Mr. 0vercash: Enwright Associates, Inc., conducted priority pollutant monitoring for Allied-Signal's Moncure Plant (NPDES Permit No. NC0001899) on June 2-4, 1987. Two 24-hour composite samples and daily grab samples were collected from the wastewater treatment plant influent, 001 outfall and 002 outfall. A 24-hour composite sample and grab sample were taken of intake (drinking) water. Enclosed is a copy of the priority pollutant monitoring report for your information and file. Field Sampling Reports I. Sample Preparation and Methodology Sample Preparation and Preservatives: The sampling program was conducted by Mr. Robert Mabry of Enwright Laboratories, Inc. All sample bottles for this project were purchased new and scrupulously cleaned with soap and warm water, an acetone rinse, a hydrochloric acid rinse and several deionized water rinses. In addition, sample bottles for organic analysis were baked in a convection oven at 105 °C for two hours. The following is a synopsis of the sample bottle requirements and preservatives used for this project. Parameter Container Preservatives Anions (Sulfate, MBAS Fluoride, Bromide, Nitrate) } gal. plastic Cool to 4 °C Sulfite BOD bottle Cool to 4 °C Cyanide Total Phenolics Metals Total Coliform Pesticides Volatile Organics ++ gal. plastic Ascorbic acid, NaOH to pH > 12, Cool to 4 °C quart glass H2SO4 to pH < 2, Cool to 4 °C 250 ml plastic HNO3 to pH < 2, Cool to 4 °C 150 ml glass, Sodium Thiosul- autoclaved fate, Coal to 4 °C quart amber glass Cool to 4 °C 100 ml amber glass Cool to 4 °C with teflon septum Non -Volatile Organics quart amber glass Cool to 4 °C These water samples were delivered to Enwright Laboratories by Robert Mabry on June 4, 1987. The samples were stored on ice overnight and logged in on June 5, 1987. Methodology: Enwright Laboratories, Inc. analyzed seven water samples for various priority pollutant parameters. The following report represents state-of-the-art technology in analytical instrumentation using EPA approved methodology, as outlined below: Parameter EPA Method No. Sulfate 375.4 MBAS 425.1 Fluoride 340.2 Bromide 320.1 Boron 212.3 Sulfite 377.1 Cyanide 335.2 Sulfide 376.1 Nitrate 352.1 Total Phenolics 420.1 Antimony 204.1 Beryllium 210.1 Chromium 218.1 Lead 239.1, 239.2 Nickel 249.1 Silver 272.1 Zinc 289.1 Aluminum 202.1 Barium 208.1 Cobalt 219.1 Iron 236.1 Magnesium 242.1 Molybdenum 246.1 Manganese 243.1 Tin 282.1 Titanium 283.1 Arsenic 206.2 Cadmium 213.1 Copper 220.1 Mercury 245.1 Parameter EPA Method No. Selenium 270.2 Thallium 279.1 Total Coliform SM 909 A Drinking Water Pesticides SM 509 A Volatile Organics 624 Non -Volatile Organics 625 * From EPA 600/4-79-020 "Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes", "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater", and 40 CFR 136. Metals analyses were conducted using Flame Atomic Absorption for most metals. Furnace Atomic Absorption was used for lead, chromium, cadmium, arsenic, and selenium. Cold vapor atomic absorption was used for mercury analysis. All metals analyses were performed on either model 551 or 951 instrumentation laboratories atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Volatile organic analyses were performed by purging 5 ml of the sample with nitrogen gas. The purged organics were trapped onto a Tenax column. The Tenax column was rapidly heated desorbing the organics onto the analytical column, a DB-5 capillary. Quantitation and identification were by model 5970 Hewlett Packard Mass Selective Detector. Non-volatile organics were extracted into methylene chloride, concentrated, and injected directly onto the DB-5 analytical column. The Mass Selective Detector was employed for quantitation and identification. As part of Enwright Laboratories routine quality control, 10 percent spikes and duplicates were analyzed with these samples. Precision and accuracy were within quality control limits. A less than value indicates that the parameter of interest was below the detection limit of the method and that, within the sensitivity of the method, nothing was found. II.
