Prior to. my arrival, Charles had turned the blower off and allowed the sludge to settle for approximately 3-4 hours. Foam was covering the sludge surface making"it difficult to see the clear supernant. The telescopic valve was lowered to begin the dewatering operation, but the valve began drawing off the foam first and then the clear water was exposed. The supernant was removed from the digester reducing the volume by approximately 18" (48,000 gallons). The supernant was removed to a level as low as the. telescopic valve would adjust. There was still clear water at the surface, so I told Charles that he could start wasting to.the digester and as.he pumps in the clear water will.over flow the valve. This would be the maximum the digester could be decanted before the blower is turn ,on. We discussed that decanting .in the digester is, the•proper way to thicken the sludge for disposal' in the drying beds, land application, -etc. and not by•storing in the treatment plant. Leaving the air turned 'off of the system for an extended time was discussed and the problems that septic sludge can cause. It was also discussed the importance of good records and the accountability of all supernants and residuals.
