Subject: Catawba - Wateree Maintenance and Emergency Protocol (MEP) Notification - Wateree Station Outage August
15, 2013
Duke Energy is planning a short outage at Wateree Hydro in order to work on the five Generator Step Up Transformers
located over the tailrace. We are building spill containment around these transformers and the current location of the
neutral grounding connections must be relocated. In order to perform this work safely, the transformers must be
completely de- energized, meaning the units cannot be operating. The outage is currently planned for Thursday, August
15 from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. However, if we have to continue to run units due to high lake levels, this work may have to
be rescheduled to a later time.
During this time no water will be able to be released from any of the five units. The reservoir level should remain within
its normal range (assuming of course no extreme rainfall events). If we successfully meet our schedule, we will not
impact any scheduled recreation flow releases. No impacts to flow releases or reservoir levels at any other Catawba -
Wateree hydro stations in North Carolina or South Carolina are expected.
I am making this voluntary notification (the New License has not been issued yet) and initiating consultation in
accordance with the Catawba - Wateree Comprehensive Relicensing Agreement (CRA) Maintenance and Emergency
Protocol (MEP). Per the MEP (see CRA Appendix D), this event is considered to be Condition A.1 - Scheduled Hydro Unit
Maintenance. Please respond at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
