Rock armoring with rock slabs and tread hardening with slabs and/or gravel will be imperative to protect the tread from the compounding impact of water flow and user -induced soil displacement, subsequently protecting the natural resources from sedimentation and water quality impact and preventing the development of an intensive management issue like a muddy quagmire and social trails that develop thereafter in avoidance. Where available, native stone will be used. Examples of rock armoring and tread hardening with boulders, stone slabs, and crushed gravel are showcased in photos below. There is a portion of the trail that crosses the headwaters of a jurisdictional stream (S-01a, shown on the attached figure). This crossing will be constructed with rock armoring as described above and listed as impact S2 in Table 3. The portions of the trail leading up to the crossing and beyond the crossing will be constructed and compacted using small walk behind machinery. Compaction of the trail is vital to ensuring a stable trail. The rocks for the rock armoring will be placed by hand to reduce disturbance in the stream. If the rock armoring is unstable, this portion of the trail may be passed over with a plate compactor to ensure sufficient compaction for trail sustainability.
