TEMPORARY SEEDING SPECIFICATIONS
PURPOSE
To temporarily stabilize denuded areas that will not be brought to final grade for a period of
more than 21 calendar days.
Temporary seeding controls run off and erosion until permanent vegetation or other erosion
control measures can be established. In addition, it provides residue for soil protection and
seedbed preparation and reduces problems of mud and dust production from bare soil
surfaces during construction.
SPECIFICATIONS
Complete grading before preparing seedbeds and install all necessary erosion control
practices, such as dikes, waterways and basins. Minimize steep slopes because they make
seedbed preparation difficult and increase the erosion hazard. If soils become compacted
during grading, loosen them to a depth of 6 - 8 inches using a ripper, harrow or chisel plow.
Liming -Apply lime according to soil test recommendations. If the pH of the soil is rot known,
an application of ground agricultural limestone at the rate of 1 to 1 Y2 tons/acre on
coarse -textured soils and 2-3 tons/acre on fine -textured soils is usually sufficient. Apply
limestone uniformly and incorporate into the top 4-6 inches of soil. Soils with a pH of 6 or
higher need not be limed.
Fertilizer -Base a lication rates on soil tests. When these are not possible, a I 10-1 -10
pp p ppya 0
grade fertilizer at a 700-1000 lb/acre rate. Both fertilizer and lime should be in into
the top 4-6 inches of soil. If a hydraulic seeder is used, do not mix seed and fertilizer more
than 30 minutes before application.
Surface roughening -If recent tills operations have I in e s resulted a loose surface additional

roughening may not be required except to break u lace clods. If rainfall causes the surf g g y eq p p g ace
to become sealed or crusted, loosen it )just prior to seeding by d sking, raking, harrowing,
or
other suitable methods. Groove or furrow slopes steeper than 3:1 on the contour before
seeding.
PLANT SELECTION
Select an appropriate species or species mixture from seeding tables at right.
SEEDING
Evenly apply seed using a cyclone seeder (broadcast) drill, cultipacker seeder or
hydroseeder. Use seeding rates given in tables at right. Broadcast seeding and
hydroseeding are appropriate for steep slopes where equipment cannot be driven. Hand
broadcasting is not recommended because of the difficulty in achieving a uniform
distribution.
Small grains should be planted no more than 1 inch deep, and grasses and legumes no
more than Yz inch. Broadcast seed must be covered by raking or chain dragging and then
lightly firmed with a roller or cultipacker. Hydroseeded mixtures should include a wood fiber
mulch.
MULCHING
The use of an appropriate mulch will help ensure establishment under normal conditions and
is essential to seeding success under harsh site conditions. Harsh site condition include:
-seeding in fall for winter cover (wood fiber mulches are not considered adequate for
this use)
-slopes steeper than 3:1
-excessively hot or dry weather
-adverse soils (shallow, rocky, or high in day or sand)
-areas receiving concentrated flow
If the area to be mulched is subject to concentrated water flow, as in channels, anchor mulch
with netting.
MAINTENANCE
Reseed and mulch areas where seedling emergence is poor, or where erosion occurs, as
soon as possible. Do not mow. Protect from traffic as much as possible. REFERENCE - NC Erosion and Sedimentation Control Planning and Design Manual - Tables 6.10a, 6.10b

PERMANENT SEEDING SPECIFICATIONS
PURPOSE
To reduce erosion and decrease sediment yield from disturbed areas, and to
permanently stabilize such areas in a manner that is economical adapts to site

conditions, and allows selection of the most appropriate plant materials.
Areas to be stabilized with permanent vegetation must be seeded or planted within 15
workingdays or 90 calendar days after final grade is reached whichever period is
Y Y 9
shorter.
PLANT SELECTION
See table at right. Use certified seed for permanent seeding whenever possible.
Certified seed is inspected by the North Carolina Crop Improvement Association.
Labeling of non -certified seed is required by law.
SEEDBED PREPARATION
Install necessary mechanical erosion control practices before seeding, and compete
grading according to the approved plan.
Lime and fertilizer needs should be determined by soil tests. When soil tests are not
available, follow rates suggested on table at right. Application rates ususally fail into
the following ranges:
-Ground agricultural limestone
Light -textured, sandy soils: 1 - 1 }z tonslacm
Heavy -textured, clayey soils: 2 -3 tons/acre
-Fertilizer
Grasses: 800 -1200 lb/acre of 10-10-10 (or equivalent)

uniform surface (slopes less than 3:1). Fill in or level depressions that can collect

rainfall.
MULCHING
The use of an appropriate mulch will help ensure establishment under normal
conditions and is essential to seeding success under harsh site conditions. Harsh site
conditions include:
-slopes steeper than 3:1
-excessively hot or dry weather
-adverse soils (shallow, rocky, or high In clay or sand)
-areas receiving concentrated water flow
If the area to be mulched is subject to concentrated water flow, as in channels, anchor
mulch with netting.
IRRIGATION
Moisture is essential for good seed germination and seedling establishment.
Supplemental irrigation can be very helpful in assuring adequate stands in dry seasons
or to speed development of full cover. Water application rates must be carefully
controlled to prevent runoff. Inadequate or excessive amounts of water can be more
harmful than no supplemental water.
MAINTENANCE
Generally a stand of vegetation cannot be determined to be fully established until soil
cover has been maintained for one full year past planting. Inspect seeded areas for
failure and make necessary repairs and reseedings within the same season, if
possible.
Reseeding -If a stand has inadequate cover, re-evaluate choice of plant materials and
quantities of lime and fertilizer. Re-establish the stand after seedbed preparation or
over -seed the stand. Consider seeding temporary, annual species if the time of year is
not appropriate for permanent seeding.
if the vegetation fails to grow, have soil tested to determine if acidity or nutrient
imbalance is responsible.
Fertilization -On the typical disturbed site, full establishment usually requires
refertilizatiun in the second growing season. Fine turf requires annual maintenance
fertilization. Use soil tests if possible or follow the guidelines given far the specific
seeding mixture.

slope with a height of 16 inches around the wire, and
smooth to an even grade.
5. Once the contributing drainage area has been
stabilized, remove accumulated sediment, dispose
of property and establish final grading elevations.
6. Compact the area property and stabilize with
groundcover.
MAINTENANCE
Inspect inlets at least weekly and after each
significant inch or neater rainfall event. Clear the

ROCK BAG/ TUBE OR CURB INLET DRAIN FILTER INSTALLATION
GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS: (SEE INDIVIDUAL MANUFACTURERS FOR DETAILS INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS)
• INSTALL THE INLET PROTEC11ON AS SHOWN ABOVE. EACH
END OF THE TUBE SHOULD BE SECURED AT BACK OF BASIN.
* THE TUBE SHOULD BE CLEANED IF A VISUAL INSPECTION SHOWS SILT AND DEBRIS BUILD
UP AROUND THE TUBE.
• TO REMOVE THE TUBE,LIFT OUT OF THE OPENING.
