The proposed project is about 30 miles long. Two alternatives for the project were presented at public hearings held in January and February 2012. Alternative A would widen existing N.C. 87 from the Elizabethtown Bypass to U.S. 74 -76 along the existing N.C. 87 route. Alternative B would widen existing N.C. 87 from the Elizabethtown Bypass to N.C. 11, rerouting N.C. 87 along N.C. 11 and continuing east to the existing U.S. 74 -76 / N.C. 87 intersection. Since the public hearings, NCDOT has investigated additional alternatives and is now considering a Riegelwood bypass option for Alternative A. This bypass would extend around the east side of Riegelwood from south of£Old N.C. 87 (S.R. 1872) to near Old Lake Road (S.R. 1740). The purpose of the project is to improve mobility and reduce travel time along the N.C. 87 corridor between Elizabethtown and U.S. 74 -76. Additional right of way and the relocation of homes and businesses will be required for'this project. NCDOT will hold a citizens informational workshop for the above project on Monday, May 13, 2013 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Acme -Delco Elementary School, located at 16337 Old Lake Road in Riegelwood. Interested individuals may attend this informal workshop any time during the above hours. NCDOT representatives will display maps and be available to answer questions and receive comments. Comments and information received will be taken into consideration as work on the project develops. Please note that there will not be a formal presentation.
