Lanes Creek @ Gilboa Road Crossing (SR1903)
Marshville
Union County
On June 28, 2021, this Office received a fish kill complaint on Lanes Creek. The fish kill was
investigated by Roberto Scheller of this Office. It was noted that the fish kill occurred about 50
yards downstream of the road crossing of Gilboa Road (SR1903) and Lanes Creek. At the time of
initial site investigation, it was not possible to positively identify cause of the fish kill as all of the
fish mortalities had been consumed by local wildlife. The following surface water quality field data
was collected from Lanes Creek at time of site visit:
Sample Point:
Approximately 50 yards downstream of Gilboa Road crossing
Temperature 22.8° Celsius (73.04° Fahrenheit)
Dissolved Oxygen (DO) 2.04 mg/1 @ 6-7 foot water depth
pH 6.66
Specific Conductivity (SPC) 143.6
After review of the morphological features of Lanes Creek and water quality conditions, it appears
that a dissolved oxygen sag occurred resulting in the fish kill. Fish mortalities were not available
for examination; therefore, a more exact conclusion is not possible.
At the time of the site investigation water quality in the Lanes Creek appeared to be improving with
dissolved oxygen, pH, Conductivity and Temperature similar to surface water readings in the
surrounding area.
