Furness PCS Phosphate 1530 NC Highway 306 South Aurora, NC 27806 Re: Whitehurst Creek West Prong 2012 Sampling Report Beaufort County, NC Dear. Mr. Furness: NCDWQ# 92 -0039 The Division of Water Quality (DWQ) has reviewed the 2012 monitoring report dated March 13, 2013. Based on the macrobenthos monitoring data presented in the report, macrobenthos taxa appear to be consistent with swamp stream taxa common in the Coastal Plain. Species richness in the mitigation channel exceeds the species richness in the downstream reference channel, which may be a result of estuarine influence in the downstream portion of Whitehurst Creek. These data appear to show that the restored stream community is trending toward a natural Coastal Plain swamp stream system. We look forward to reviewing the 2013 monitoring data. We appreciate the opportunity to comment on the 2012 Monitoring Report. Please contact Eric Kulz in our Office at (919) 807 -6476 if you have questions regarding our comments.
