Fullwood, Executive Director June 19, 2000 Mr. Michael Wolfe HDR Engineering, Inc. of the Carolinas Suite 1400 128 South Tryon Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28202-5001 Dear Mr. Wolfe: higelMg ECT wATSf R 4VACl In response to your letter of 11 May 2000, John Alderman and Judith Johnson of the NCWRC, Nongame & Endangered Wildlife Program, made a field assessment of aquatic habitat conditions in North Fork Crooked Creek, Union County, on 1 June 2000. The habitat has been severely degraded since 1995. They agree that, using current monitoring designs, it would be impossible to discern the level of impact from the Crooked Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant discharge and non -point source impacts (e.g., significantly increasing stormwater impacts, water withdrawals) with regard to the health of freshwater mussel, insect, and fish populations. In light of these findings, we agree that there is no need for HDR Engineering, Inc. to continue monitoring aquatic habitats in North Fork Crooked Creek, Union County. We appreciate Union County's desire to preserve the integrity of its aquatic habitats and look forward to working together to reduce impacts from both point and non -point sources. If we can be of further assistance, please contact our office at (919) 528-9886. Sincerely, Owen F. Anderson, Piedmont Region Coordinator Habitat Conservation Program cc: Colleen Sullins, Section Chief, Division of Water Quality
