PCS PHOSPHATE - TANK FARM REMEDIAL ACTION PLAN
QUARTERLY OPERATIONAL AND MAINTENANCE REPORT FOR
THE INJECTION AND WITHDRAWAL WATER WELLS
AUGUST, 1998 - OCTOBER, 1998
The Tank Farm Remediation System consists of a series of seven
injection water wells located on the south side of the Tank
Farm Area and a series of fourteen (14) water withdrawal wells
located on the north side of the Tank Farm Area.
Injection Water Well System
The injection water well system operated with the DPW Water -
Anthracite Sand Filter / Ultraviolet Light (ASF/UV)
disinfection system throughout the period. Short periods of
planned downtime were experienced for preventative maintenance
and inlet DPW Water strainer cleaning.
Daily operational data are collected by the Shipping Department
and reported to the Operations Environmental Department. The
total monthly and quarterly volumes of water injected as well
as the month end water level in the Water Level Control Tank

Some additional short periods of planned downtime for
preventative maintenance, pipe header cleaning, and
troubleshooting on individual pumps in the fourteen well system
were experienced. Details of these activities are:
Air Compressor for the Withdrawal Well Pumps
An air compressor with air dryer supplies the pneumatic power
for the fourteen withdrawal well pumps. On 9/21 a problem was
detected with a valve on the south tower of the air dryer. The
air compressor was shutdown for three hours to clean the cooler
and to change the separator and air filter. On 9/22 the faulty
valve on the south tower of the air dryer was replaced. On
9/24 the air compressor was shutdown for two hours to replace
belts and change the oil and oil filter.
Withdrawal Well Pump Discharge Piping
On 10/28 the underground discharge piping headers from the SWW-
1, 2, and 3 and CWW-1, 2, and 3 pumps were cleaned with
hydrochloric acid (HC1);.
Confined Sand Formation Withdrawal Well (SWW) Pumps
SWW-1; On 8/10 the pump stopped due to scale buildup. On 8/11
the pump was cleaned with HC1 and placed back in operation.
SWW-2; The pump operated the period with no problems.
SWW-3; On 8/10 the pump stopped due to scale buildup. On 8/11
the pump was cleaned with HC1 and placed back in operation. On
10/19 it was determined that the pump required rebuilding with
new parts and the well was cleaned with HC1. On 10/20 the pump
was returned to operation with a new type cycle counter. On
10/22 the pump stopped and was shaken to start.
SWW-4; On 10/29 the pump stopped and was shaken to start.
SWW-5; On 8/20 the pump was determined to be scaled up and was
cleaned with HC1.
SWW-6; The pump operated the period with no problems.
SWW-7; On 8/3 the pump stopped and was shaken to start.
