The complaint included the attached pictures that show a milky white discharge what was reaching the storm drain under Third Street. Per the City's Stormwater Permit and under the City's Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination Ordinance and Program the City is required to investigate all complaints concerning illicit discharge and/or pollutants to the stormwater system. The investigation into the discharge could not determine a definite source of the pollution but it appeared to be coming from the houses that backup to the stream off of Stoneham Road including your residence at 139 Stoneham Road. The stream under Third Street flows untreated into Moadams Creek and pollutants can negatively impact the stream's ecological and biological processes as well as impact human health. This is not a Notice of Violation letter because we could not definitively identify where the pollution was originating from but we wanted to ask for your assistance in limiting water pollution before it reaches storm drains or streams. This includes into roof or sump drains. Attached to this letter are several educational documents and pictures of the discharge that you may find helpful. In the future, if you notice or see any discharges into the stream, please contact Montrena Hadley with the City of Mebane at (919)563-5901 or myself at (336)226-5534. IL Illicit discharges contain sewage, deter- gents, bacteria laden water, or toxic chem- icals. Many citizens may pollute without knowing what they're doing. That's why public education is such an important part of an IDDE program. Helping citizens understand the difference between a storm sewer and a sanitary sewer and encourag- ing everyday changes means cleaner, safer waters for today and future generations! Reporting an Illicit Discharge: If you see something that doesn't look or smell right, it's your responsibility to report it. Call your local government and report the following: • What time did you see the discharge? • Where did you see the discharge? • What do you think the discharge is? • Was there a business or individual involved? ror more information on water quality and stormwater management go to: www.stormwater5MAKT•org or contact jtormwater,5MART 22 16 W.
