Guar gum carbohydrate is a long chain linear molecule with a molecular weight of approximately 1,500,000 or greater. The general structure is shown in Figure 1. Guar gum polymer chains attract and weakly capture water, producing vol- umes of influence. They also physically tangle with one another in the solution. These phenome- non produce viscosity of guar gum solutions. Guar beans are grown primarily in Pakistan and India. The bean plants are harvested and dried following the growing season. The beans are shelled from the pods, the germ and hull removed. The resulting splits are wet -milled into powder; granulation and quality grade the powder. Prod- ucts are re -blended according to specification, bagged and marked. Rantec purchases a wide range of polymers for use in many industries throughout the world. All shipments of polymer are given rigorous quality testing and assurance prior to shipment to the end user. Stocks of polymer are maintained throughout the world. Rantec markets a number of products based on natural guar gum polymers for mining, explosive, hydromulching, construction and feedapplication. These include KP4000, KP3000, G150, UFF- SP and DI. Rantec also supplies a wide range of synthetic polymers. Geotechnical applications. include french drain and extraction trenches, as well as permeable reactive barriers (PRB).t G150 is biodegradable and can be bro- ken down completely maintaining the permeability granular fill, soils and producing formations. Rantec has more than 15 years of experience in supplying G150 for use in liquid shoring and drill- ing applications. As part of Rantec's continued -improvement program G150 is now easier to mix; less dusty and produces more viscosity per pound. G150 fluids immediately recover original viscosity as soon as shear is relieved. High shear will not destroy the G150 polymer molecule as can occur with many synthetic polymers. Hazards Identification. Emergency Overview: Concentrations of dust suspended in the air present a fire and explosion hazard. Inhalation of dust may cause respi- ratory irritation and possible lung injury with symptoms of shortness of breath and reduced lung function. Guar gum is very slippery when wet. Acute Health Effects: Eye Contact: Contact may cause irritation based on studies with laboratory animals. Skin Contact: Contact may cause dryness. Inhalation: Inhalation of dust may cause irritation of the nose, throat and respiratory passages. Symptoms include coughing, sore throat, nasal congestion, sneezing wheezing and shortness of breath. May cause life -threatening aller- gic reaction in susceptible individuals. Ingestion: DO NOT INGEST. While this product is not toxic by ingestion, swallowing small amounts could cause complete blockage of the mouth, pharynx, trachea, esophagus and/or gastrointestinal system which may cause chok- ing, suffocation and/or other life threatening medical conditions. Get medical attention immediately. Chronic Health Effects: Overexposure to any nuisance dust may cause lung injury. Symptoms include cough, short- ness of breath and reduced pulmonary function Carcinogenicity: None of the components of this product are listed as carcinogens or suspected carcinogens by OSHA, IARC or NTP. Medical Conditions Aggravated by Exposure: Persons with pre-existing skin and respiratory disorders may be at an increased risk from exposure. Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Wear positive pressure, self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: Powder has the potential to form explosive mixtures with air. Avoid creating dust. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames. As with all dusty materials, use preventative measures including spark proof motors and ventilation to control dust. Combustion Products: Oxides of carbon and'nitrogen. 6: Accidental Release Measures _. Wear appropriate protective clothing and equipment. Caution: Guar gum is very slippery when wet. Sweep up or vac- uum, avoiding the creation of airborne dust, and collect into a suitable container for disposal. Keep spilled product away from flammable and combustible materials. Wash residual traces with hot water after sweep -up is complete. Test area for residual slippery conditions. - 4'HandIffig and storage Handling: Avoid generating and breathing dust. Avoid eye contact: Use with adequate local exhaust ventilation and dust collection to maintain the concentration of airbome dust below the exposure limits. DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS The information on RCRA waste classification and disposal methodology provided below applies only to the Cytec product, as supplied. If the material has been altered or contaminated, or it has exceeded its recommended shelf life, the guidance may be inapplicable. Hazardous waste classification under federal regulations (40 CFR Part 261 at seq) is dependent upon whether a material is a RCRA "listed hazardous waste" or has any of the four RCRA "hazardous waste characteristics." Refer to 40 CFR Part 261.33 to determine if a given material to be disposed of is a RCRA "listed hazardous waste"; information contained in Section 15 of this MSDS is not intended to indicate if the product is a "listed hazardous waste." RCRA Hazardous Waste Characteristics: There are four characteristics defined in 40 CFR Section 261.21-61.24: Ignitability, Corrosivity, Reactivity, andToxicity. Tc determine lanitabili , see Section 5 of this MSDS (flash point). For Corrosivity, see Sections 9 and 14 (pH and DOT cormsivity). For Reactivity, see Section 10 (Incompatible materials). t-or Toxicity, see Section 2 (composition). Federal regulations are subject to change. State and local requirements, which may differ from or be more stringent than the federal regulations, may also apply to the classification of the material if it is to be disposed. Cytec encourages the recycle, recovery and reuse of materials, where permitted, as an alternate to disposal as a waste. Cytec recommends that organic materials classified as RCRA hazardous wastes be disposed of by thermal treatment or incineration at EPA approved facilities. Cytec has provided the foregoing for information only; the person generating the waste is responsible for determining the waste classification and disposal method. 14.TRANSPORT INFORMATION SHIPPING NAME: This section provides basic shipping classification information.
