Dear Mr. Londergan:
I am writing in response to your request for a health evaluation regarding the use of the
following chemicals during tracer tests at a dry cleaning facility in Camp Lejeune, North Carolinacrs
methyl-2-pentanol, bromide, 1-propanol, 1-hexanol, 2,4-dimethyl-3-pentanol, 1-heptanol, 2-ethyl-1- P
hexanol, and calcium chloride. Based upon my review of the information submitted, I offer the
following health evaluation.
WORKER PRECAUTIONS DURING APPLICATION
1. Some effects reported to be associated with exposure to the chemicals listed above are as
follows: dizziness, sedation, decreased lung function, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased heart
rate, and irritation. If the product is released into the environment in a way that could result in a
suspension of fine solid or liquid particles (e.g., grinding, blending, vigorous shaking or mixing),
then proper respiratory protection should be worn. The application process should be reviewed
by an industrial hygienist to ensure that the most appropriate respiratory equipment is worn if
needed.
2. Persons working with this product should wear goggles or a face shield, gloves, and protective
clothing. Face and body protection should be used for anticipated splashes or sprays.
Eating, drinking, smoking, handling contact lenses, and applying cosmetics should not be
permitted in the application area during or immediately following application.
OTHER PRECAUTIONS
1. Access to the area of application should be limited to the workers applying the product. In order
to minimize exposure to unprotected individuals, measures should be taken to prevent access to
the area of application.
2. According to your letter dated December 12, 1997, "There are no private wells within the
confines of Camp Lejeune and none are allowed. All water on base is supplied by the Camp

Lejeune water distribution system (analogous to a municipal water supply system). The closest
off -base property, and hence, the nearest possible private well, is approximately four miles from
Site 88 to the northeast." According to your letter dated November 19, 1997, "The nearest active
water supply well is HP-642 which is located approximately 1.5 miles east of the site."
According to your letter, the groundwater is anticipated to flow southwest with estimated tracer
concentrations ranging from 1 to 5 mg/L and 1,000 mg/L calcium chloride concentration within
the area of application after the demonstration is completed and extraction operations cease.
Based upon your analysis, the estimated maximum tracer and calcium chloride concentrations
following the natural displacement of the plume at a distance of 332 feet southwest of the site is
0.014 mg/L and 3 mg/L, respectively. Based upon this information, the tracers and calcium
chloride are not expected to impact an existing water supply.
However, measures should be taken to protect future wells that may be placed near the area of
application. Using the limited toxicity data available for the listed alcohols and assuming similar
structure -activity -relationship between them, a safe drinking water concentration range of 3 to 17
mg/L was estimated. (The estimated concentration following the application is 1 to 5 mg/L.)
Calcium chloride is a water soluble salt which in solution is essentially innocuous, but solid
particles have been known to cause irritation.
3 According to your letter, the New River is located approximately 3,000 feet west of the site. It is
recommended to contact Ms. Dianne Reid with the Water Quality Section to determine if the
tracer tests could impact the New River at (919)-733-5083 ext 568.
