Box 88 1600 River Road Wilkesboro, NC 28697 SUBJECT: Tyson Harmony Plant Samples Dear Mr. Billings: DIVISION OF WATER QUALITY __ NOV 2 7 2000 SLR - WATER DUALITY POINT SOURCE BRANCH We have subsequently learned that the Tyson Harmony Plant (permit # NC0005126) in the Mooresville Region does use chlorination for their waste. It is therefore necessary for you to continue checking the samples from this facility upon receipt, for the presence of chlorine. It is our understanding that you rarely get a positive result for chlorine when samples are tested, however if a positive result is obtained you must the treat sample for chlorine. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have further questions or concerns about this matter, please contact us at 919-733-3908. Sincerely, James W. Box 88 1600 River Road Wilkesboro, NC 28697 SUBJECT: Tyson Harmony Plant Samples Dear Mr. Billings: This letter is to address your request to cease performing joxi IViopp auction (0/R) test on BOD samples from the Tyson Harmony Plant permit NC11005T26 in the Mooresville Region. Our understanding is that there is no chlorination of the waste from this facility. It seems that you are obtaining false positive results on these samples due to an interference that appears to be chlorine. This has caused you to use an unreasonable amount of Sodium Sulfite reagent, which in itself causes an oxygen demand when, used in excessive amounts. It has been determined that the waste has a very high Nitrate Nitrogen content. This is known to be an interference in the BOD analysis, often causing unreliable or falsely high results. Oxidation of reduced forms of nitrogen, mediated by microorganisms, exerts nitrogenous demand. After consulting with Mr. Tom Belnick of the NPDES Section of this Division and Mr. Wes Bell of the Mooresville Regional Office, we are granting your request to cease performing the O/R test on samples submitted from the Tyson Harmony Plant for BOD analysis. You must continue to treat all other chlorinated samples for BOD analysis and remove the chlorine as specified in the method. I have been asked to inform you that the permit for this facility is to be reviewed, and if determined to be necessary, the permit may be changed to require the use of the Carbonaceous BOD5 (CBOD5) method. We request that you familiarize yourself and your staff with this procedure in anticipation of its use for analysis of samples from the Tyson Harmony Plant. The procedure is explained in the Standard Methods, 18th Edition - Method 5210. We will be glad to work with you and your staff on any problems you may encounter. hope that this satisfactorily addresses your stated concerns. If you have further questions or concerns about this matter, please contact us at 919-733-3908. Sincerely, 9a/m-e.4-}mir- James W. Meyer Laboratory Section Cc: Norman L. Good Connie U.
