NOTICE OF A CITIZENS' INFORMATIONAL WORKSHOP FOR THE
PROPOSED REPLACEMENT OF BRIDGE NUMBER 55 OVER LANCE CREEK ON
SHULLS MILL ROAD IN BOONE
TIP Project No. B -5118
Watauga County
The North Carolina Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting,
known as a Citizens' Informational Workshop, for the Shulls Mill Road proposed bridge
replacement project on Monday, June 3, 2013. It will be held between 5 pm and 7 pm
at the Foscoe Community Center, located at 233 Park Road, Banner Elk.
The NCDOT proposes to replace the existing bridge (Bridge No. 55) over Lance
Creek on Shulls Mill Road (State Road 1557) with a wider structure that meets current
design standards. The existing bridge was built in 1962, and is considered functionally
obsolete, which means it is safe, but deteriorating, in relatively poor condition, and
needs to be replaced. The proposed bridge construction will take place in its current
location. The road will be closed during construction, and traffic will be detoured off -site.
Construction of the new bridge is scheduled for January 2016. The proposed structure
will have two (2) 11 -foot travel lanes (one in each direction).
Citizens are invited to speak individually with NCDOT officials and review the
proposed design maps. The opportunity to submit written comments or questions will
also be provided. Interested citizens may attend at any time during the aforementioned
hours. There will not be a formal presentation.
Anyone desiring additional information may contact John L. Williams of the
NCDOT Project Development Unit at 1548 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-
1548, by phone at (919) 707 -6178 or via email at jlwilliamsncdot.gov.

Disabilities Act for disabled persons who want to participate in this workshop. Anyone
