NO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SURVEY REQUIRED FORM
This form only pertains to ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES for this project. It is not
valid for Historic Architecture and Landscapes. You must consult separately with the
Historic Architecture and Landscapes Group.
PROJECT INFORMATION
Project No: County: Rockingham
WBS No: 17BP.7.R.140 Document: State Minimum Criteria Checklist
Federal Aid No: Funding: State Federal
Federal Permit Required? Yes No Permit
Type:
TBD
Project Description:
Replace Bridge 239 on SR 1998 (Wentworth St.) over Wolf Island Creek in Rockingham County.
Area of Potential Effects (A.P.E.) is approximately 183 meters (600 ft.) long and 60 meters (200
ft.) wide. The project is State-funded. The Federal permit requirements are unknown (this review
assumes that a Federal permit will be required). No easements will be required.
SUMMARY OF CULTURAL RESOURCES REVIEW
Brief description of review activities, results of review, and conclusions:
The review included an examination of a topographic map, the Rockingham County web soil
survey, an aerial photograph, and listings of previously recorded sites, previous archaeological
surveys, and previous environmental reviews at the Office of State Archaeology (O.S.A.). The
bridge is oriented approximately east-west.
The topographic map (Reidsville) shows the A.P.E. is located in a wide creek valley. The
landforms in the A.P.E. include flood plains and ridges. The landforms in the northwest quadrant
include flood plain along the creek and a gently-sloped ridge toe. The landforms in the southwest
quadrant appears to be mostly flood plain, with a ridge toe at the west end. There is a structure
shown on the ridge toe. The landform in the southeast quadrant appears to be mostly flood plain.
The A.P.E. includes bridge 238 at the east end. SR 2001 intersects SR 1998 at the east end of the
quadrant. There is one structure in the A.P.E. The landform in the northeast quadrant appears to
be mostly a floodplain. The A.P.E. includes bridge 238 at the east end. In general, level floodplain
landforms (if well-drained) have a moderate to high potential for archaeological sites.
The Rockingham County soil survey shows there are several soil types in the A.P.E. The soil in
over half (54%) of the A.P.E. is Codorus loam (0-2% slopes), frequently-flooded, a somewhat
poorly-drained soil found on floodplains. This soil type is present on the flood plain in the
southwest and northwest quadrants. Other soils include Fairview-Poplar Forest complex (8-15%
slopes), moderately eroded (27%), a well-drained soil found on ridges. This soil type is present in
the southeast and northeast quadrants.
The aerial photograph shows the northwest quadrant is cleared (pasture?). The southwest quadrant
is wooded, and there is a house at the west end. The southeast quadrant a mix of wooded and

cleared. There is a structure and a road intersection near the east end. The northeast quadrant is
cleared (pasture?), and there is a structure at the east end.
There are no previously recorded archaeological sites within or adjacent to the A.P.E. for this
project. A project along Wolf Island Creek has been reviewed by the State Historic Preservation
Office (HPO) (ER 01-7819?). The line on the OSA map is cross-hatched, indicating a survey may
have been recommended. The A.P.E. is not within any areas that have been surveyed for
archaeological sites.
Brief Explanation of why the available information provides a reliable basis for reasonably
predicting that there are no unidentified historic properties in the APE:
The level flood plain landforms in the A.P.E. have poorly-drained and/or eroded soils.
