As I spoke with you this morning at 11:35 a.m.: On the morning of January 13th, 2003 around 4:30 a.m., the
third level supernate valve on the Secondary Digester was not shut but clogged. We had the overflow,
which is around 1 foot above the 4th "top" level, in case the water level in the Secondary Digester got that
high it would go to the bed. At around 4:30 a.m., third level became unclogged, probably through pressure,
And the bed got full and some ran over the rings and back into the plant. Some ran over the side of the
bed. Being this was an end bed; some overflowed onto the ground.
I estimate that approximately 9000 gallons went onto the ground; but not sure how much of this went back
into the plant.
If 9000 gallons went on the ground this had to be a high estimate. It ran down the drainage ditch on the
plant and did reach our catch basin at the back of the plant. This catch basin is there to catch any run off
from the plant. The catch basin has a standpipe so that in case of run off, any solids will settle before
leaking into the stream. Very little reached the catch basin; and did not reach the receiving stream.
The supernate has no odor. A lot of it stayed beside the beds, we put sand on this to keep from running any
further. All sand used in this manner will be placed back on the sludge beds. The supernate pH is 6.89.
I am going to start plans to heighten the wall on the end sludge beds so that if it does overflow, it will flow
into the other bed.
