Hey Dave,
We experienced some erosion issues related to a rain event last week that resulted in stormwater eroding a hillside
across from Watertank Rd on HWY 221 in Ashe County - Station 352 left. Luckily, the bottom of the slope empties out
onto a large flat gravel area with a couple houses/yard. So, we don’t think much, if any, made it to the stream (Old Field
Creek). Our crews have cleaned the area up and are fixing the slope back. They didn’t see any sediment on the stream
banks or piled up in the creek, so hopefully it stayed on high ground.
We may alter the stormwater at this location, by moving the flow over a few feet so that it goes down an existing rip rap
(class 7 rock, so big stuff) embankment. That’s probably what we should have done originally. This will prevent
stormwater from running over the same area that eroded last week (a vegetated hillside, but steep). I can put together
a drawing if needed, just let me know. At the very least, we can go by and check it out next time you are up this way.
Finally, sorry I didn’t notify you late last week when it happened. I was on vacation last week, so just learned of the
issue this morning.
Thanks!
Kevin
