Dear Mr.Smith:
In accordance with Part III, Section E, Facility Closure of the subject NPDES permit,Duke Energy Progress,LLC
(Duke Energy)is providing notice that the legacy flue gas desulfurization(FGD)wastewater treatment system and
settling pond(FGD)will be retired from service during the third quarter of this year.
As a part of the recent process water redirect activities undertaken to comply with the federal Coal Combustion
Residual rule and with the NC Coal Ash Management Act,Duke Energy built a new FGD wastewater treatment
system.The new FGD wastewater treatment system became operational on February 20,2020.The Division has
given approval for both the new system and the legacy FGD system to run in tandem to assure that all FGD
wastewater is properly treated before discharge at either internal outfall 010(legacy)or internal outfall 012(new
system).
Duke Energy understands and agrees that there will be no unpermitted discharge of untreated FGD wastewater
during length of work associated with the closure of the legacy FGD wastewater system.
