No.: BD -5105L — Person 2 Person County 3/25/2012 Hydraulics Project Manager: W. Herbert Turner, Jr., PE (Florence & Hutcheson) Randy Henegar, PE (NCDOT Hydraulics Unit) ROADWAY DESCRIPTION The project consists of construction of a new 110 feet long cored slab bridge to replace the existing 62 foot long bridge #2 on SR 1519 over Mill Creek. The total project length is 0.138 miles. The project is located in the Roanoke River Basin. The project drainage system consists of grass shoulders, grated inlets with associated pipes, rip rap pad at the pipe outfall. Jurisdictional Streams: Mill Creek ENVIRONMENTAL DESCRIPTION The project is located within the Roanoke River Basin in Person County. The stream is classified as Class C. Storm water impacts to the stream have been minimized by utilizing sheet flow on grass shoulders along the roadway, using rip rap pad to diffuse flow before entering the stream. The existing drainage patterns have been maintained with the hydraulic design of the project. BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND MAJOR STRUCTURES The primary goal of Best Management Practices (BMPs) is to prevent degradation of the states surface waters by the location, construction and operation of the highway system. The BMPs are activities, practices and procedures taken to prevent or reduce stormwater pollution. The BMP measures used on this project to reduce stormwater impacts are: Sheet flow on grass shoulders along the roadway This will promote infiltration and filtration of pavement runoff by directing sheet flow over grassed shoulder slopes. Outlet protection with rip rap Rip rap outlet protection is provided at end bent two to dissipate energy from the bridge storm water to provide a non - erosive sheet flow (approximately 80 feet) for infiltration and filtration before entering the stream with Q 10max =0.45 cfs and V l 0max =0.70 fps. Deck drains to avoid direct discharge into stream There will be (14) 8" x 4" drainage openings at 6' spacing on the left and right side of the bridge from Station 14 +12 to 14 +24 LT and RT and from 14 +94 to 15 +12 LT and RT to avoid direct discharge into surface water. Bank stabilization Bank stabilization with class II rip rap is provided on the stream banks near 14 +50 and 15 +05 to provide long -term bank stability to prevent erosion. This will provide a stable stream and the stream will not degrade in the evolution process.
