Please amend Item B(12) of the permit application to include that variance request as well so 1 can include that in the approval. Please also note for future that whenever you provide calculations to the Division, they need to be the actual calculations with your seal. Your May 10, 2004 letter provided the answers to the calculations requested with no seal (per PE board rules). The Division has had extensive discussions about the Manning's n value of .013 versus what the manufacturer recommends for PVC pipe (.009 - .011). After much research, we have decided that since PVC pipe is fairly new, there is not conclusive evidence to support a lower n value. Therefore, we have decided to retain this conservative value of .013 in our design criteria as many other state standards require. Sullins, Deputy Director Division of Water Duality TO: FROM: SUBJECT: May 18, 2004 MEMORANDUM Permit File WQ0022388 K. Marie Doklovic, PE Variance to Gravity Sewer MDC There was a contractor error during the construction of the Mountain Island '+ tillage condorninums where 6-inch line was installed instead of 8-inch line. A variance has been requested by the City of Mount Holly to allow the 6-inch line to remain. The 6-inch lines are the feeder lines from groups of 1 g or 12 units into an 8-inch main. The AlE provided velocity calculations for the 6-inch line at the minimum slope installed (.51 %) that show a 2 fps velocity at half full. Additionally, the minimum slope was not met on three of the 6-inch segments. The engineer requested a variance for minimum slope also.
