We bought land here before going back home that day in April of 1997 because of the beauty of the area, especially Blount's Creek ( "the River "), its wildlife and the friendly local people. Daily we enjoy Blount's Creek and the wildlife and vegetation surrounding it. We don't want our beautiful creek ruined by a mining operation. We ask DWQ to deny permits to Martin Marietta Mining if their plan continues to allow the dumping of thousands of gallons of wastewater into the mouth of Blount's Creek. Martin Marietta Mining's proposed limestone mine will change the pH of the stream, resulting in a change in aquatic species and vegetation. The crabs will be gone, the speckled trout and blue heron likely as well, along with many other species of fish and birds. The proposed discharge will change the nature of the upper creek with a change in water flow, salinity, pH and the general stability of the stream bank. State law is very clear that it does not allow a discharge of waste to change the species composition of a stream from its natural state. Approving the Discharge Permit will violate State law and the permit should not be approved. Please act responsibly as an environmental agency and deny this permit. Some folks counter our opposition with the idea that it's important to create jobs in Beaufort County. We agree, BUT with the few jobs that would be created in the mining operation will come the loss of the crabbing and fishing jobs that many people along the creek hold. Add to that the loss of property tax revenues when the wells are ruined on over 150 home sites and residents leave Beaufort County. We hope that we are heard and that Martin Marietta is not given the permits to begin operation. Sincerely, Thomas R.
