SAVE BLOUNT'S CREEK APR 10 2013
DWQ--WARO
Petition Background
The Division of Water Quality has issued a draft discharge permit for the proposed Martin Marietta
limestone mine located in Beaufort County. The company proposes to discharge up to 12 million
gallons per day of groundwater and storm water into upper Blounts Creek. This volume of water will
result in changes to the PH, turbidity (amount of light penetrating the water) temperature and salinity of
Blounts Creek. Martin Marietta and its hired consultants has and will continue to characterize these as
"minor" changes. Minor changes in these fundamental characteristics of a wetlands will result in major
environmental changes to the organisms that live in very narrow environments. The micro- organisms
at the bottom of the food chain will be unable to survive these changes. Changes at the bottom result in
changes at the top. If the food source disappears those organisms that can move will move to other
locations. Those that can not move will die. Changes in salinity may result in the creek no longer
being used by saltwater species such as the Blue Clawed Crab, Striped Bass, Sea Trout, Drum and
many others that are frequently found and in some instances commercially caught on the creek. The
creek and its surrounding wetlands are an incredibly productive ecosystem. Unfortunately it is also a
very fragile system and the proposed discharge will have drastic and lasting effects. Once damaged it
takes decades for wetlands to recover. We can not afford to continue to allow our wetlands to be
destroyed in order to allow a large corporation to maximize its profits.
Please sign the attached petition demanding that Martin Mariatta be required to find an alternative way
to deal with this discharge.
PETITION
Martin Marietta is seeking to discharge at least 12,000,000 gallons of water per day into Blounts Creek.
We the undersigned resident, property owners, or interested parties do hereby petition the Division of
Water Quality to require Martin Marietta to find an alternative means of dealing with the discharge.
We believe that the changes resulting from dumping this volume of water into this small creek will
drastically change this very fragile ecosystem and result in the diminishing or eliminating of many of
the species currently inhabiting these waters. Once damaged it will take decades for it to recover.
